How this result is built
Add VAT to a net price or extract VAT from a gross price.
VAT added to a net price is the price times the rate. VAT inside a gross price is not the gross times the rate. A 20% VAT-inclusive price contains VAT of one sixth, because the gross is 120% of the net. The extract mode does that division.
What the opening example is for
Type the rate that applies to the good. Reduced rates and exemptions are common, and a default of 20% is only a starting example.
The walkthrough below uses the numbers already sitting in VAT Calculator. Press Calculate and the headline should match this page. Then put your own figures in. The math does not run until you press the button, and Clear hides the result.
What each field is doing
The “Amount” line on VAT Calculator starts at $250.00. If the label is a rate, type the annual figure the contract uses. If it is money, type the amount that will actually move, not a rounded hope.
VAT Calculator treats “VAT rate” as its own entry, and the form opens with 20%. Leave that figure only when it matches the statement, the quote, or the plan you are testing. Press Calculate after the edit so the chart and the schedule move with it.
Before you replace it, “The amount is” reads Net, add VAT on VAT Calculator. A round example is useful for learning the page. It is a poor substitute for the number on your own paperwork, so replace it and run the form again.
The opening result, line by line
Press Calculate on the opening form and Total with tax is $300.00. That is the number the rest of this section is talking about.
Tax is $50.00 when you run the opening figures on VAT Calculator. That line is part of the same calculation as the headline. It is not a second balance you can spend on top of the result. Change one input and press Calculate if you want to see whether this line moves.
How those lines were produced
On this opening pass, rate is 20.00%. That line is part of the same calculation as the headline. It is not a second balance you can spend on top of the result. Change one input and press Calculate if you want to see whether this line moves.
A second pass changes only “Amount”, from $250.00 to $275.00. Total with tax moves from $300.00 to $330.00. Nothing else on the form was edited, so the gap between those two results is the effect of that one field on VAT Calculator. If the gap is tiny, this page is not very sensitive to that entry. If the gap is large, get that entry from a document before you plan around the result.
What this page will not claim
VAT Calculator uses the operating numbers on the form. It does not file a return, set a price for you, or know which costs your accountant would call fixed. Read the result next to the books, not instead of them.
VAT Calculator stops at its own formula. When the next question is different, open GST Calculator (Exclusive or inclusive GST, at the rate you enter.); Sales Tax Calculator (Add the tax, or pull it back out of a total.); Margin Calculator (Profit as a share of the selling price.). Do not add those results to this one as if they were the same kind of dollar.
Check the result before you use it
Start on VAT Calculator by reading the labels, not the headline. The opening labels are Amount ($250.00), VAT rate (20%), The amount is (Net, add VAT). If a label is not the fact you have, the result cannot turn into that fact later. The illustration on the form lands on $300.00. When you press Calculate and see that same figure, the button and this explanation are using one formula.
Change one field at a time. Write down the headline, edit a single line, and press Calculate again. A large jump means that line carries the result. A line that does not move is a line the formula ignores, which is a reason to confirm you opened the right page. VAT Calculator is built for one job: Net, VAT, and gross, in either direction. The description on the page says the same thing in a sentence: Add VAT to a net price or extract VAT from a gross price.
When the paperwork disagrees
Then hold the headline next to a source outside the site. That source might be a loan estimate, an account statement, a pay stub, or the public limit named in the methodology. A few cents of difference on a long schedule is ordinary rounding. A different rate, a fee you never typed, or a tax the form does not ask for is not rounding. Correct the input. Do not average the page with the paperwork.
When the outside source still disagrees, VAT Calculator has reached the edge of what it will claim. It will not phone a lender, pull a county record, or apply a credit you left blank. Send the calculator name, every input, and the result you expected through the contact page if you think the formula itself is wrong. Until that is settled, read $300.00 as the output of the fields above and nothing else.
FAQs
Why isn’t inclusive VAT just 20% of the total?
Because the 20% was charged on the net, not on the total. Extracting it as 20% of the gross overstates the tax.
What do the opening figures on VAT Calculator assume?
They are a worked example, not your account. Amount starts at $250.00. VAT rate starts at 20%. The amount is starts at Net, add VAT. Press Calculate and you should see total with tax of $300.00. Replace every line with your own figures before you act on it.
What happens if I change Amount?
Amount is one of the drivers on VAT Calculator. Change it, leave the other fields alone, and press Calculate. The headline and the lines under it move only to the extent the formula uses that field. Clear removes the result so the next set does not sit beside a stale one.
How is this different from the GST page?
VAT Calculator answers the question in its own fields: Net, VAT, and gross, in either direction. The GST Calculator page is for a different question: Exclusive or inclusive GST, at the rate you enter. Run both only when you need both answers, and do not add the headlines together.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. VAT Calculator computes in the browser after you press Calculate. The desk does not keep a copy of the balance, the income, or the rate you typed. Still, do not put an account number or a password into a money field.
This page is educational. It is not a lender’s quote, a tax filing, or personal financial advice. The methodology explains the formulas and the disclaimer explains the limit.
